In the project highlighted here, Argo Spring was contracted by a customer in the defense industry to fabricate a custom compression spring. Employing our versatile onsite precision equipment, stranded / braided wire material was wound in accordance with customer specifications. The component was heat treated for longevity, thoroughly cleaned, and subjected to a comprehensive testing protocol for accuracy and integrity with penetrant inspection, dimensional inspection, and functionality testing.
Stranded / Braided wire springs are used for a variety of applications where their unique properties; such as high-impact and fatigue resistance, offer distinct advantages over single-wire springs. The stranded/braided wires distribute stress more evenly, making them more resistant to impact and fatigue than single-wire springs. This makes them ideal for applications where springs are subjected to repeated shock loads. Also, they offer improved flexibility & heat dissipation. The braided structure of these springs allows for greater flexibility and heat dissipation compared to single-wire springs. This makes them suitable for applications where tight packaging space is available and high operating temperatures are encountered. In addition, stranded / braided wire springs offer redundancy and fail-safe operation. If one strand in a stranded or braided wire spring breaks, the remaining strands can often still carry the load, allowing the spring to continue functioning to some extent. This provides a level of redundancy and fail-safe operation that is not present in single-wire springs. This is crucial for applications where spring failure could have serious consequences.
In total, 5,400 springs were manufactured for this project, packaged, and sent to the customer-specified location.
