Clock springs, also called spiral torsion springs, flat spiral springs, or power springs, store rotational energy and then release it in a controlled manner to supply torque for mechanical systems. One end of the strip, called the arbor, becomes the center of the spiral and is attached to a shaft. The spring is wound up by turning the arbor, which creates and stores torque. The outer end of the spring is attached to a barrel. As the spring uncoils the stored rotational energy is released and provides smooth movement.
In addition to clocks and watches, clock springs are commonly used in applications that retract, return, or retrieve, such as steering wheels, mechanical timers, or counterbalances.
At Argo Spring Manufacturing Co., Inc, we manufacture custom close-wound clock springs in a range of sizes, gauges, and materials to fit many different applications. Learn more about our capabilities and some of the ways clock springs are used.
Argo Spring Mfg. provides full-service production of clock springs from initial material selection to finishing and inspection. Our engineering team is available for support with all custom projects.
All of our power springs are built to last and resist environmental damage, starting with our custom metal fabrication services. The metals we work with include, but are not limited to:
All materials are selected for appropriate strength, long-term flexibility, and ability to provide consistent torque in a given application.
We use precision CNC machining and manufacturing to shape flat stock into exact spring forms.
Our state-of-the-art manufacturing processes include:
At Argo Spring Mfg., we’re committed to high-quality custom springs that meet customer requirements and tolerances. We are AS9100D certified and conduct first-article inspections and use Statistical Process Control (SPC) in our quality control measures.
Flat metal strips are available up to 3 in. wide and up to 0.002 in. to 0.375 in. thick. Our clock springs can be made with up to 20 revolutions and a variety of end types including bridles, hole straps, hooks, and rings.
Custom finishing treatments and surface treatments, including black oxide, plating, and powder coating are also available.
Custom clock springs from Argo Spring Mfg. provide torque to mechanical systems throughout many major industries and industrial applications. Here are some of the markets we serve:
Automotive manufacturers use custom clock springs for:
Medical devices also use custom clock springs to handle very fine torque-driven applications that rely on precise handling. Clock springs can control the release of torque and return mechanisms for reliable use in complex medical systems. Applications include:
Custom clock springs can provide reliable torque and motion control in many environmental conditions, including temperature extremes at high altitudes. Aerospace and defense applications include:
Custom clock springs add precise tension, provide counterbalancing effects in fine-tuned mechanical machinery, and methodically retract components in moving mechanisms. Common applications in the industrial sector include:
Consumer electronics commonly include clock springs that fit in compact enclosures to provide years of consistent spring force. They work well in portable, handheld, or wearable devices, as well as kitchen timers, toys, reels, and more. They can also be used in devices with battery contacts that need to provide tension and in retractable cords requiring a mechanism to draw them in.
For over 60 years, Argo Spring Mfg. has specialized in manufacturing precision clock and other types of springs to meet the requirements of many types of applications. In addition to springs, we also manufacture metal stampings, wireforms, fourslide stamped products, assemblies, and screw machine products in our 45,000-square-foot facility in Norwalk, California.
